How Can I Grow In Holiness?
Here at Catholic Answers one of the questions we get again and again is one that could have eternal consequences:
"How can I grow in holiness?"
Most Catholics want to grow in holiness, but they don't know where to start. They don’t know where to look for spiritual direction, for examples of how others have answered this question for themselves.
The answer to the question is surprisingly simple.
Look to the Saints – the holy men and women of God who came before us, and lived lives dedicated in service to God.
Many of these men and women of heroic virtue came out of a very tumultuous time in the Church – The Reformation.
The Faith, which had withstood persecution in its infancy, destruction from within through various heresies later, and moral corruption from popes, cardinals, and bishops who placed their self-interest and immorality above the demands of their office, was in dire straits.
The Church was in a dark place, perhaps the darkest it has ever endured. It needed exceedingly honorable saints.
What could have been a complete implosion of Mother Church was saved by the courageous and judicious acts of the saints of the Counter-Reformation.
The heroes of the Counter-Reformation came from all walks of life and made considerably different marks on this critical period in Church history.
That's why we're so thrilled about a new book from author Shaun McAfee
Drawing upon these saints’ writings, works, and life events, Reform Yourself! reveals in each of
them a model of a particular virtue or grace that we all need—along with practical tips for imitating them in our own lives. For example:
- Francis de Sales: sharing the Faith with gentleness and patience
- Teresa of Avila: the courage to persevere in prayer:
- Philip Neri: joyful humility and a sense of humor even during trials
- Jane de Chantal: loving God with simplicity of heart and childlike trust:
- Aloysius Gonzaga: mastery of the flesh through self-sacrifice
Through the lessons of these saints and others, Reform Yourself! shows you a time-tested path to a richer spiritual life, deeper knowledge of God’s revealed truths, and a more fruitful living-out of your vocation.
We all need to reform our souls—let the saints who reformed the Church show you how!
