Practical Steps for Growing in Holiness

Mere emotional assent to holiness will not suffice, even though that can be a part of it. Intellectual assent, although pivotal, by itself won’t suffice either. It is imperative that we rediscover personally this profound truth of the Holy Spirit’s outpouring and seek it daily. We should commit ourselves anew to:

  • daily invocation of the Holy Spirit, particularly in moments of decision-making, temptation, or dryness;
  • regular and devout sacramental participation, especially frequent confession and reception of the Eucharist, to renew and deepen our communion with the Spirit;
  • engagement with Scripture and spiritual writings, allowing the Spirit to illuminate our minds and inflame our hearts; and
  • spiritual direction and communal prayer, fostering accountability and deepening our capacity to discern the Spirit’s movements in our lives.

May we never tire of praying, “Come, Holy Spirit,” confident in his response, eager for his guidance, and inflamed by his presence to love of Christ and commitment to a life of holiness and evangelization. For indeed, when we yield fully to his divine influence, we will experience the words of Jesus anew: “Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). If we commit ourselves to the pursuit of the person of the Holy Spirit, we will become vessels aflame with his presence, renewing ourselves, immersing ourselves in the fullness of revealed truth, transforming our families, our communities, and our world, to the glory of the Father, through Christ our Lord.
